If you didnвЂ™t think Fleetwood Mac were boring, over-produced, soulless aural wallpaper after 1973, Haim are the girls for you Their catchy choruses, pop song structures, and breezy, care-free sound and lyrics make them feel like an old friend There is potential in this power pop, but Haim need to develop further, and may have been ill-served by the hype surrounding them The package is seductive, brimful of hooks вЂ“ and, with HaimвЂ™s wit softened into songs of romantic anomie, so slick it slips down like ice-cream eventuallyДЄ pretty impregnable collection of songs. Given their status as BBC Sound Of 2013 poll-winners, it's hard not to feel somewhat underwhelmed by Haim's debut album Haim are playing to their strengths here: namely verve, hooks, and middle sister DanielleвЂ™s voice (yes, it does stand up to those comparisons with Stevie Nicks) and so far, itвЂ™s a strategy that seems to be working for them Haim are different enough to justify the attention, even if as a listening experience it could do with a touch more real diversity Haim neither flinch nor blush in their directness and neither should you in enjoying вЂDays Are GoneвЂ™ for what it is: unabashed fun Their charming debut recalls the dancy side of Eighties Top 40 radioД¬aters very specifically fans of slick Eighties pop-rock and little else Packs bubblegum snare, toe-stubbing synth bass, and contemporised '80s pop trappings that evoke everything from Scritti Politti's Cupid & Psyche 85 to Laura Brannigan's Self ControlДays Are Gone makes them seem an increasingly rare thing: a guitar band heralded as a sure thing, who still feel like a sure thing once you've heard their debut albumДЄlthough this is a debut LP, some of the songs have been around for a while and these tend to be the strongestДays Are Gone is a hell of an opening salvoД«ecause the surface is so smooth, it takes a listen or two to discover how little depth lies beneath it The rest of us are just going to kick back in the sun with вЂDays Are GoneвЂ™ and some piГ±a coladas The purists might think Haim have let the studio sessions rub the edges of their raw talent. Only a real grinch could fail to throw their arms around Days Are Gone One of the best pop albums you'll hear all year It balances expectations with mystery, aligning their identity with a roulette of vantage points Their debut doesnвЂ™t define them explicitly. No one is saying that being in a rock band ought to be a dignified affair, but Days Are Gone benefits from being a serious album rather than just another opportunity for the California siblings to toss their hairДЄn album that will fade blissfully into your local Urban Outfitters/vintage shop/American gathering, where, like some kind of mollifying drug, people exposed to it will be happier without either knowing or caring why Yes, they could stand to disguise their borrowings a little better, but pop songs of this quality are rare
